Mustard Hexagon Yoga Skirt Free Crochet Pattern

OEMGrid: Original Essentials, Maker Tools & Artisan Crafts • October 29, 2026

Introduction

This mustard hexagon yoga skirt is a relaxed, bohemian project that looks far more intricate than it is. It is written for confident beginners who can chain, double crochet and slip stitch, and who are ready to make their first motif-based garment. The skirt is built from open, lacy hexagons joined in rows, so it has a soft drape and a gentle flare that moves with you through a yoga class or a weekend wander. A terracotta waistband and matching waist edging add a warm pop of color, while the mustard hem keeps the look grounded and easy to wear. The finished piece sits at the natural waist, stretches comfortably, and feels light and airy against the skin.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Fingering weight wool (100% wool, e.g., Knit Picks Palette), 231 yds (211 m) per 50 g skein.

  • Contrast color (CC), Terracotta: 1 skein (231 yds / 211 m).

Gauge

One hexagon motif measures 3.5" (9 cm) across flat-to-flat after blocking. Work one motif, block it lightly, and measure from flat edge to flat edge; adjust your hook size if needed to match.

Tips Before You Start

  • Make all 66 motifs first and block them to the same size before joining. Consistent motifs are what keep the rows even.
  • Lay out your rows on the floor before joining so you can check the flare and spacing.
  • Join motifs as you go on R3 of each motif, which saves seaming and keeps the joins neat.
  • Keep your chain spaces loose enough to slip stitch into easily, but not so loose that the hexagons lose their shape.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Hexagon Motif (make 60 in MC, 6 in CC for the waistband)

With MC (or CC for the waistband motifs), ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring.

R1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] 5 times, ch 2, join with sl st to top of ch-3. (6 groups of 3 dc, 6 ch-2 sps)

R2: Sl st to first ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp (corner), *ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ch 1, join with sl st to top of ch-3. (12 groups of 3 dc, 6 ch-1 sps, 6 ch-2 sps)

R3: Sl st to first ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp (corner), *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ch 1, join with sl st to top of ch-3. (18 groups of 3 dc, 12 ch-1 sps, 6 ch-2 sps)

Fasten off. Motif measures 3.5" (9 cm) across flat-to-flat.

Joining Motifs

Join motifs in rows as you go, using MC, working R3 of each motif and joining to adjacent motifs at ch-2 sps and ch-1 sps with sl st as follows: when working a ch-2 sp that will join to another motif, work ch 1, sl st in corresponding ch-2 sp of adjacent motif, ch 1, then complete the dc group. For ch-1 sps, work ch 1, sl st in corresponding ch-1 sp of adjacent motif, ch 1.

Skirt Construction

Row 1 (waistband): Join 6 CC motifs in a ring (join first and last motifs). This forms the waist edge.

Row 2: Join 12 MC motifs to the bottom of Row 1, spacing evenly (2 motifs per CC motif).

Row 3: Join 12 MC motifs to the bottom of Row 2.

Row 4: Join 18 MC motifs to the bottom of Row 3, increasing by 6 motifs (1.5 motifs per motif of the previous row, stagger joins).

Row 5: Join 18 MC motifs to the bottom of Row 4.

Total motifs: 6 CC + 60 MC = 66 motifs.

Waistband Edging

With CC, join yarn at the waist edge (top of Row 1).

R1: Ch 1, sc evenly around waist edge, working 1 sc in each dc and 1 sc in each ch-1 sp, join with sl st to first sc. (approx. 120 sc)

R2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with sl st to first sc. (120 sc)

Fasten off.

Hem Edging

With MC, join yarn at the hem edge (bottom of Row 5).

R1: Ch 1, sc evenly around hem, working 1 sc in each dc and 1 sc in each ch-1 sp, join with sl st to first sc. (approx. 180 sc)

R2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with sl st to first sc. (180 sc)

Fasten off.

Assembly and Finishing

Weave in all ends with the tapestry needle, working them into the backs of stitches so they do not show. Block the skirt to measurements: waist 28" (71 cm), hip 40" (102 cm), length 20" (51 cm). Pin the waistband and hem edges straight, mist lightly with water, and let dry completely before wearing. Check that the waistband stretches comfortably to 36" (91 cm) and that the hem hangs evenly.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • For a longer skirt, add another row of 18 MC motifs below Row 5 before working the hem edging.
  • Swap the terracotta waistband for a deep teal or rust for a different bohemian palette.
  • Wear the skirt over leggings or a slip for extra coverage, or add a simple elastic band inside the waistband for a snugger fit.
