Nordic Snowfall Eyelet Dress Free Knit Pattern

Introduction

The Nordic Snowfall Eyelet Dress is a simple, elegant tube dress knitted in crisp white fingering-weight wool, scattered with evenly spaced eyelet holes that look just like falling snow. It is designed for confident beginners and intermediate knitters who are comfortable knitting in the round and working basic shaping, and it makes a beautiful layering piece for cold-weather wardrobes. The only color accents are a butter yellow ribbed hem, a folded neckband, and matching armhole edgings, which give the dress a clean, modern finish. It looks smooth and light in stockinette stitch, feels soft and warm against the skin, and drapes gently with a slight waist and hip shaping for an easy, wearable fit.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Fingering weight wool (100% wool, approx 400 yds/100 g). Main color (MC) white: 800 (900, 1000, 1100) yds. Contrast color (CC) butter yellow: 100 (110, 120, 130) yds.
  • Needles: 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle, 80 cm long; 3.0 mm (US 2.5) circular needle, 40 cm long for the neckband and armhole edgings.
  • Notions: Stitch markers, stitch holders or scrap yarn, tapestry needle, tape measure.
  • Finished size: To fit bust 81-86 (91-97, 102-107, 112-117) cm. Finished bust circumference 86 (96, 106, 116) cm. Length from hem to shoulder 80 (82, 84, 86) cm. Hem circumference 96 (106, 116, 126) cm.

Gauge

28 sts and 36 rnds = 10 cm in stockinette stitch with the 3.5 mm needle. Knit a swatch in the round (or work a flat swatch and measure it slightly stretched), then check that 28 stitches measure 10 cm across before beginning.

Tips Before You Start

  • Place a locking stitch marker at the beginning of the round and use two more markers to mark the "each side" shaping points so the waist and hip decreases and increases stay perfectly aligned.
  • Work a yarn over and k2tog loosely on the eyelet rounds so the holes stay open and even after blocking.
  • Because the dress is long and worked in the round, use a circular needle at least 80 cm long and let the fabric rest on the cable rather than stretching it as you knit.
  • Keep a row counter for the eyelet rounds: they fall every 10th round, so counting from the last eyelet round keeps the snow scatter evenly spaced.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Hem (CC)

With the 3.5 mm needle and CC, CO 240 (264, 288, 312) sts. Join in rnd, being careful not to twist, and pm.

Rnds 1-8: [k1, p1] rib (240 (264, 288, 312) sts).

Change to MC.

Next rnd: Knit, dec 24 sts evenly (216 (240, 264, 288) sts).

Body

Work in St st (all knit) until the piece measures 10 cm from the hem.

Eyelet rnd: [k10, yo, k2tog] rep to end (216 (240, 264, 288) sts).

Rnds 1-9: Knit (216 (240, 264, 288) sts).

Rep the eyelet rnd every 10th rnd 7 more times (8 eyelet rnds total).

AT THE SAME TIME, shape the dress: Dec 1 st each side of marker every 12th rnd 4 times (208 (232, 256, 280) sts).

Work even until the piece measures 40 cm from the hem.

Inc 1 st each side of marker every 8th rnd 6 times (220 (244, 268, 292) sts).

Work even until the piece measures 55 cm from the hem.

Armhole Shaping

Next rnd: BO 8 (10, 12, 14) sts, knit to last 8 (10, 12, 14) sts, BO 8 (10, 12, 14) sts. Place the remaining 204 (224, 244, 264) sts on a holder for the back.

Front

With RS facing, rejoin MC to the first st of the front. Work back and forth in St st.

Row 1 (RS): BO 3 sts, knit to end.

Row 2: BO 3 sts, purl to end.

Row 3: BO 2 sts, knit to end.

Row 4: BO 2 sts, purl to end.

Row 5: BO 1 st, knit to end.

Row 6: BO 1 st, purl to end (94 (104, 114, 124) sts).

Work even until the armhole measures 18 (19, 20, 21) cm, ending with a WS row.

Neck shaping, next row (RS): k28 (32, 36, 40), BO 38 (40, 42, 44) sts, knit to end (28 (32, 36, 40) sts each side).

Work each side separately. Dec 1 st at the neck edge every RS row 4 times (24 (28, 32, 36) sts).

Work even until the armhole measures 20 (21, 22, 23) cm. BO all sts.

Back

With RS facing, rejoin MC to the first st of the back. Work as for the front, including the armhole and neck shaping.

Assembly and Finishing

Sew the shoulder seams with a tapestry needle, matching the bound-off edges. For the neckband, with the 3.0 mm needle and CC, pick up and knit 120 (124, 128, 132) sts evenly around the neck opening. Join in rnd and pm. Rnds 1-6: [k1, p1] rib. BO all sts in rib. Fold the neckband to the WS and sew it in place for a clean folded finish. For the armhole edging, with the 3.0 mm needle and CC, pick up and knit 80 (84, 88, 92) sts evenly around one armhole. Join in rnd and pm. Rnds 1-3: [k1, p1] rib. BO all sts in rib. Rep for the other armhole. Weave in all ends, then block the dress gently to the finished measurements, pinning the hem and neckband flat and letting the eyelets open fully as it dries.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • For a longer tunic version, add extra stockinette rounds before the armhole shaping and repeat the eyelet rounds to keep the snowfall pattern continuous.
  • Swap the butter yellow CC for a soft silver or pale blue to change the mood while keeping the same clean contrast.
  • If you prefer a wider neckline, bind off a few more center stitches on the front and back, then pick up the same proportion of stitches for the neckband.
